by Deepika Padam

As we, at the American Institute of Architects’ Young Architects Forum (AIA YAF) www.aia.org/yaf celebrate our 20 year anniversary, we find ourselves at a critical moment regarding the future of our chosen profession. Every day and too often we hear talk about losing a whole generation from the practice of architecture. Though new grads have the highest unemployment rate, the situation isn’t much better for those who have been around for a while, whether they’re going through the licensure process or are already licensed architects. And the hidden resentment of those who do have jobs is growing; they see a bleak outlook for their immediate future. This emerging professional group is clearly a victim of the economic downturn. So, with YAF’s focus on architects licensed less than 10 years, we decided it was time to get a handle on this sad situation.

Earlier this month 65 young leaders headed to Washington DC from all directions of the nation. The YAF Summit20, taking place just prior to the AIA Annual Grassroots Leadership Conference, was organized by the AIA National YAF Advisory Committee to dig into the issues facing the new generation of practitioners. We wanted to know what YAF and the AIA can do to help, and what our action plan should be for the next five years and beyond. YAF summits are held every five years and it was intriguing to see that the top three issues from Summit15 (mentorship, leadership, and fellowship) did not appear in the top six issues of the Summit20. We have a lot of work to do!

Constructions, 58 years in Architecture and Other Comments

Kemp Mooney, the architect and the educator, is an influential part of the art and architecture scene in Atlanta and beyond. Mooney graduated from Clemson University and received his Master of Architecture from Yale University before he was 25 years old, and presented at the Venice Biennale in his early 30s. He is known for stating, “This is the hand that has shaken the hand…” of many important personalities of his time and our time (Paul Rudolph, Buckminster Fuller, Robert Venturi, Steven Holl, and Rem Koolhaas to name a few). Through his extensive studies, travels, and amazing library, he is a delightful storyteller, artist, and architect.

Mooney has influenced the life and careers of many of his students in the last 40 years. His devotion to education goes beyond preconceived parameters. If you haven’t traveled to New York with the architecture map conceived and drawn by Kemp Mooney, then you haven’t really been to New York. It is a map, and an experience, that should be patented and published.

Constructions, 58 years in Architecture and Other Comments is a retrospective of the work of Kemp Mooney so far. The exhibition will open this Wednesday, March 14th, 2012 at Southern Polytechnic State University.

The Young Architects Forum of Atlanta (YAF Atlanta), a program of the American Institute of Architects Atlanta, is pleased to announce the third Annual competition entitled 10Up. We’re calling on young designers to step up to the 10Up challenge! This year Modern Atlanta (MA) and YAF Atlanta are teaming up with Atlanta Beltline Inc. to create a temporary installation on the Atlanta BeltLine.

Each year MA (Modern-Atlanta) hosts a celebration of architecture and design with a week of events in and around the city of Atlanta. This year the executive directors and founders of MA have once again asked the YAF Atlanta to create a competition for a temporary outdoor installation which will act as a beacon for this week of events. The structure is to be installed before and operational during the MA 2012 “Design is Human” events, currently planned for May 26-June 10, 2012. The project is not only to accentuate the series of events organized by MA, but will also be an event of its own celebrating young talents exhibiting their work to the public.

The Winning Submission will be built and published!

Visit the yafatlanta.org/10up for more details, and register for the competition at AIA Atlanta.

creative mornings atlanta

‘Georgia Tech architecture alumnus Michael Arad’s memorial to those killed in the attacks on September 11, 2001, opened to virtually unanimous rave reviews recently.

“Reflecting Absence” is a serene, public space for collective contemplation and remembrance. Two 30-feet deep reflecting pools create footprints where the Twin Towers once stood. The names of the 2,983 people whose lives were lost are etched across bronze panels surrounding the two pools. The placement of each name was determined through family requests and a complex algorithm in order to recognize personal connections among the departed.

The memorial was dedicated on the 10th anniversary of the attacks in September 2011. An accompanying Memorial Museum and pavilion are expected to open in September 2012.

In the eight years since his vision was selected out of 5,201 entries from 63 nations, Arad has revisited Georgia Tech on multiple occasions and will once more to share his experiences with students, faculty, and alumni.’ - gatech, school of architecture

About Edwin E. Akins, II, AIA, LEED AP

Having practiced architecture for over 13 years, teaching part-time during much of that period, Ed has developed an interesting perspective on the links between practice and academia. Since 2002, he has taught at both the Georgia Institute of Technology and at Southern Polytechnic State University, where he is currently an Assistant Professor coordinating third year design studios and environmental technologies. His work with Atlanta communities to achieve Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) grants and his engagement with non-profits in the area has helped local organizations envision planning and growth strategies. Through local art installations, his architectural practice, and as the co-author and author of conference papers on reparative planning and solar accommodation in design, Ed continues to expose and explore the delicate relationship between human occupation and nature while continuing his contributions to the AIA.
